My Music Mentors

Mentoring plays a substantial role for us whose careers revolve around the arts and other related sectors. Those who went to college can name a person or two who acted as their mentor throughout their college years.

I’ve had several music mentors (my primary art form), and they usually fall into one of two categories: those who taught me the art of making music, and those who gave me opportunities to grow in music.

Among those who taught me music, I had 4 private piano instructors between age 9 and my sophomore year of college. Each mentor helped me turn out to be what I am now, but there is one mentor that stood out among others. My three music mentors are more concentrated on technique while my mentor in high school focused on my gift for songwriting since she herself is a songwriter as well. Rather than just take me through a system, she took an interest in me as a musician and sought to develop me as an artist.

As a composition major in college, I also had personal instruction with two composition teachers – and again, one of the two stood out as a mentor in music. He discovered my weak points and strong points as a composer and he provided me with a task that will help me grow. He was not just a teacher, but also a personal coach, willing to deal with my human side, my attitude concerns and my meltdowns in the process.

There were also some mentors along the way who did not really teach me music, but recognized the gift and made room for it. I spent a lot of time in church music surroundings as a young man, and several of the musical and spiritual leaders in those settings gave me access to musical instruments and recording equipment, let me play on the music team (even as a youth), allowed me room to make mistakes, and even found me other areas to play. These people were my private cheerleaders, but even more than that, they had a hand in building a foundation of success under me.

In thinking back on my music mentors, 2 realizations stand out. First off, those mentors that really affected me were the individuals who took interest in me, as a musician and as a person. Second – looking back at my growth, I believe my mentors played more of a role in my education than my collegiate studies..Even though a few of my teachers and mentors were in the college scenario, it was the personal attention that helped me develop in music, far more than the classes, homework or tests. College was helpful in my development, but my music mentors were pivotal in my development.

With all the emergence of new hardcore and punk bands, Escape the Fate is among the top. Their popularity have just been steadily increasing with the release of their three popular albums. More and more fans have been discovering their unique and yet classic hardcore music. The band, just like with any other popular bands, in turn helped in the increased demand for rock band souvenirs or apparel, including for skeleton gloves.

Escape the Fate is often categorized as a post-hardcore band. What exactly is post-hardcore music? It is actually a deviation, although not too much, from the popular hardcore music genre. However it also got a mix of other music influences such as experimental rock and punk rock. To some people, they actually find it hard to further differentiate post-hardcore from these other influences.

Escape the Fate was formed in Nevada, USA in 2004 with original members composed of Ronnie Radke as the lead vocalist, Bryan Monte Money lead guitarist, Omar Espinosa rhythm guitarist , Max Green bassist, and Robert Ortiz in drums.

However, the band experienced some personal problems that led to the replacement of some of its members.

One of the first major setbacks they experienced was the sentencing into prison by their lead vocalist, Ronnie Radke. The band later replaced him with Craig Mabbitt.

He was followed by Carson Allen, their one-time keyboardist. Allen left them to join On The Last Day.

Omar Espinosa also left the band in 2007 due to unspecified personal reasons.

Needless to say, it is but a common phenomenon that we see in most bands of this stature to see its members come and go through the years. However, Escape the Fate is a fairly new band and yet they have already gone through such major band member changes. One of the problems they dealt with was the drug addiction of some of their members. Through rehabilitation they were able to get through it.

Still all of these problems did not hinder them from gaining such popularity. It was mainly due to the success of their three albums to date: This War is Ours, Dying is Your Latest Fashion, and There’s No Sympathy for the Dead.

The ‘This War is Ours’ album somehow showed the inifluence of other rock or punk bands, namely Guns N Roses and Motley Crue. Also, one of their songs in that album titled “We Won’t Back Down” somehow tells us how much partying and of the good rocking life that they were living out there in the desert of Nevada, particulary in that fun city of Las Vegas.

Then a few years later, their ‘Dying is Your Latest Fashion’ album came out. That album was a feat itself for the whole band, after all they were at that time, experiencing a few personal problems. To think that they were able to produce such a good album with all that fuzz between them was truly amazing.

Now Escape the Fate continues on its moving forward into the pantheon of the rock music legend. They have stood the test of time, and even the test that they themselves have brought to their band. But they live on and will continue to create great rock music for all.
